What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, or lipo, is a procedure that removes excess fat in areas of the body. This procedure is able to reshape and slim down areas you may feel self-conscious about, giving you a more aesthetically pleasing and tighter looking appearance, enhancing your body’s contours, and improving overall appearance and confidence.

About Liposuction

Liposuction is able to remove fat from a wide variety of areas on the body, such as the hips, thighs, back, abdomen, buttocks, waist, knees, ankles, calves, chest, arms, neck, cheeks, and chin. In addition, liposuction is able to be performed alongside other procedures, such as a breast reduction or tummy tuck. Liposuction is unable to treat cellulite and is not recommended for those with a poor diet and lack of exercise, as well as obesity. You are a good candidate for liposuction if you are within 30% of your ideal weight. Your surgeon will discuss with you your medical history, goals with the procedure, evaluate any pre-existing health conditions and risks associated with the procedure, as well as how realistic your goals are, and how much of them can be met. Liposuction is done through small incisions made on desired areas you wish to contour. A cannula, or a thin tube, is inserted into the skin through the incisions to loosen up the excess fat. The cannula is then moved in a back and forth motion, with the separated fat suctioned out through a syringe or vacuum.

After the procedure, elastic bandages will cover the treated areas to reduce swelling and provide support to the newly slimmed areas. Small tubes may be placed in the treated areas to drain any excess fluid or blood. Your surgeon will give you a list of specific instructions on how to care for the affected areas--this varies for each individual. Other specific instructions include when it is safe to participate in physical activities such as exercise depending on the location that is healing on your body. Pain medication is prescribed as necessary, and overall is very minimal. It can take several months for swelling to completely disappear.
